A Syrian family of seven will call Kelowna home sometime this month.
The multi-generational family is being sponsored by the Kelowna Gospel Fellowship (KGF) Church.
“Our team is very excited as we prepare for our family's arrival and continue to be overwhelmed by the generosity of KGF and the community. Our current need at this time is for drivers. Our family is large and will require at least two drivers for each appointment and meeting. We are also going to need help taking the six-year-old girl to school each morning,” Jeremy Sanbrooks, KGF Refugee Lead Team Chair said.
The goal for the refugee team at the church is to set up two volunteer drivers every morning during the work week.
The four generation Syrian family is currently living at a camp in Turkey. The family includes a grandmother, mother, father, two sons and a daughter, as well as a granddaughter.
The sponsorship application for this family was approved in two days and Sanbrooks said they were told many sponsorship groups only get 48 hours’ notice before their family arrives.
“Crazy times are ahead!”
So far the church has raised more than $51,000 for the Refugee Sponsorship. Mike Penninga, senior pastor said they won't stop at just one family.
"Our plan is to not just sponsor one refugee family, but to make this a normal part of our ministry as a church family. That’s why this fund is not just for one family, but for Refugee Sponsorship as a whole moving forward."
