It’s a night of fun for a crucial cause in Kelowna, as people from all over the Okanagan gather for the Annual Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Ball.
Taking place at The Delta Grand Okanagan on Saturday, May 28, the Daffodil Ball is being held in support for Dr. Torsten Nielsen, an innovative researcher working in the area.
Nielsen is working to improve treatments for synovial sarcoma, a rare and deadly form of cancer that hits young adults the hardest.
Some people were given the opportunity to sit in on the Canadian Cancer's Society's " Meet the Researchers Breakfast" on Friday morning.
At the event, attendees got to learn more about Dr. Nielsen's work and how his groundbreaking and life-saving research affected the lives of the O'Neil family, from Kamloops. They found out their young son Kieren was diagnosed by Dr. Nielsen with having synovial sarcoma. Kieren and the O'Neil family will be at the Ball to share the story of how Dr. Neilsons research played a significant role in treating him.
Working with a team of scientists and physicians, Dr. Nielsen will be testing new therapies, hoping to target the causes of these sarcomas, beginning clinical trials across Canada. His research may mean new life for patients labelled incurable before.
“The Daffodil Ball is Kelowna’s signature fundraising event and a ‘must-attend’ night-out for many,” said Randene Wejr, Southern Interior Regional Director, Canadian Cancer Society. “Our 12th annual gala will be a magical, laugher-filled, inspiring evening of philanthropic fun.
“Join us as we raise funds for Dr. Torsten Nielsen’s research for synovial sarcoma.”
On top of the usual fun, the Daffodil Ball is introducing a new element, celebrity waiters. Okanagan community leaders such as JDS Mining’s Jeff Stibbard, NHL star Wade Redden and Predator Ridge golf pro AJ Eathorne will be raising the stakes, accepting tips, dares and bribes for charity.
2016 Daffodil Ball Honorary co-Chairs Debbie Robert and Shannon Gall said they are looking forward to introducing the Celebrity Waiter idea to Kelowna’s legacy gala.
"The Daffodil Ball is already known for being a fun and successful event. We're looking forward to introducing this new and unique twist as we raise funds for an important cause,” said Robert.
The evening will also feature emcees Andy and TJ, Gifts of Hope, a live auction hosted by “The Auctionista” Linda Leja and a few surprises.
