Get ready to battle at Kelowna’s Pokémon GO meet-up

The Pokémon GO craze is continuing and it’s going to get even bigger with a Kelowna-based meet-up.

The Centre of Arts and Technology is hosting a Pokémon GO open house and meet up on Friday in the city.

"The bulk of our student body are people who grew up with Pokémon and who have embraced the arts and the technology field," Amy Nutt, director of marketing and admissions at the centre explained.

"The goal of the Centre is to open the doors to the community and to get people in, as well as our current students involved."

The meet-up will begin on Friday at 5:30 p.m. During the open house, people will tour the facility, all while catching different Pokémon.

Nutt said that the tour ends at one of the very first Pokémon gyms that were created in Kelowna.

The first five people in the doors for the meet-up will also win a fancy Pokémon GO survival kit. The kit includes a drawstring backpack, a throwback to the Pokémon card game, wristbands, glow sticks and a few other secret goodies.

Pokémon GO is all about fun and interacting with other people who have a common interest.

"It bridges the gap for people who didn't necessarily fit into one stereotype or another. Here you'll find people of all ages, of all diversity, who are coming and walking and catching and meeting up at these Pokémon gyms," Nutt said.

Nutt, who has never seen a trend reach this magnitude, said the centre wanted to hold this meet-up as a way to show younger people that a future in technology is possible. These Pokémon players could be the next people who come up with an app that goes viral, just like Pokémon GO has.

The meet-up will be held at 1632 Dickson Ave.
