2 Kelowna skiers ready to fly high at BC Winter Games

Two young skiers from Kelowna’s Big White Freestyle Club have qualified for this year’s BC Winter Games.

Meghan Calder, 13, and Malory Wagner, 14, will be in the moguls, slopestyle and big air events in the U16 category, competing against the top athletes from across the province.

Danielle Calder, Meghan’s mother and former Big White Freestyle Club president, says it’s been amazing to watch the two skiers grow and learn how to push boundaries in safe and healthy ways.

“Big White Ski Resort has been very supportive of the club over the years,” Danielle adds. “We have one of the best terrain parks in the province, and the mountain supports us through the build of an air site and airbag training area, so the athletes are able to train safely and effectively to be ready for this level of competition.”

Meghan began skiing at the age of two and got into freestyle when she was around eight years old.

Both skiers started out in Big White Ski School’s Freeride program before graduating to the Freestyle Club.

The BC Games are held March 23-26, with freestyle skiing, alpine skiing and snowboarding events at Silver Star Ski Resort, and the competitions are open to the public with no admission fee.

Meghan and Malory are part of a 19-member Okanagan team, which includes freestyle skiers from Apex, Big White, Silver Star and Sun Peaks.

Athletes accumulate points during the previous year’s competitions, and qualification for the Games is based on their final rank in the provincial standings.

This is Meghan’s first year of eligibility for the BC Games.
