Alcohol will be allowed in 3 Kelowna parks starting on Tuesday

Starting on Tuesday, people will be able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage in certain city parks and beaches.

As of July 4, drinking alcohol will be allowed in Waterfront Park, Kinsmen Park and Boyce-Gyro Park from noon until 9 pm.

Although city council has agreed to allow people to drink on those three beaches, there are several rules in place.

People will have to avoid pathways, parking lots, playgrounds and sports courts in all three parks as well as the zipline at Gyro Park. Areas within 15 metres of any homes are also off limits.

Glass alcohol containers are also strictly prohibited.

After years of discussion, Kelowna council cautiously approved the bylaw changes on June 5.

The decision was supported by all council members, however, there were several concerns raised about how the public will be informed and what the impact will be on RCMP and bylaw officers.

People will be asked to keep an eye out for signs in each park, which will lay out the rules, areas that are restricted and contact information for bylaw officers.

In an effort to relieve the impact on RCMP and bylaw officers, council followed city staff’s recommendation to steer clear of busier parks such as City Park, Kerry Park and Stuart Park because they all tend to receive more police calls.

The pilot program is scheduled to wrap up on Oct. 6.
