A more-than-year-long investigation into an interprovincial drug trafficking operation has produced some significant positive results in the last few days.
The Kelowna RCMP initiated the investigation in June 2022 after the discovery of a “significant quantity of drugs,” as well as the identification of a suspect believed to be involved in the drug trade across several provinces.
According to police, the investigation revealed that the suspect had ties to criminal activities in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and potentially Ontario.
Kelowna RCMP Strike Force members then learned the suspect frequently travelled between Vancouver, Burnaby, Chilliwack, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto.
In those cities, he engaged in “numerous suspicious cash transactions with individuals previously convicted of drug and firearms offences,” police explained.
Finally, more than 14 months after it all began, Strike Force members arrested the suspect as he left a known stash location in West Kelowna.
That led to seven search warrants being executed across the Central Okanagan, as well as in Merritt, Chilliwack, Burnaby and Calgary.
In total, three handguns, a replica firearm and more than five kilograms of controlled substances were seized, including fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, MDMA, synthetic cannabinoid receptor type one agonist and 11 kilograms of cannabis.
“This was a great example of an interprovincial investigation conducted by the Kelowna Strike force unit with the support of our partner agencies in BC and Alberta,” said Insp. Beth McAndie.
“The community impact of seizing this quantity of illicit drugs and the associated potential risk of overdose due to the toxic nature of these drugs, is immeasurable.”
McAndie credited the RCMP’s ability to leverage partnerships across Western Canada as the key to the investigation’s success.
