Kelowna crime rates back on the increase after 2017 decline

There has been an overall increase in crime in Kelowna, according to the latest statistics.

Supt. Brent Mundle from Kelowna RCMP has delivered his newest crime report to council.

It will be discussed on Monday.

The report shows increases in crime recorded in 2018 compared to the previous year, including:

  • Property crime offences up by 10.1% (852 more files – total files 9,285)

  • Person offences up by 5% (62 more files – total files 1,302)

  • Other criminal charges up by 8.7% (248 more files – total of 3,096)

The fourth quarter of 2018 also showed increases when compared to the fourth quarter of 2017

Those include:

  • Property crime offences up by 6.3%

  • Downtown property crime offences up by 7.8%

  • Bicycle theft up by 60.6%

  • Theft from auto up by 25.2%

But person offences are down by 6.6%.

The report also praised the RCMP’s work on tackling drug crime in the city as well as investigations into serial robberies.
