Kelowna's downtown is home to a new coffee shop

There’s a new coffee shop in downtown Kelowna.

Black Sheep Coffee Bar, owned by Allan and Angela Paterson, opened its doors on May 6.

“We've been looking at opening a coffee shop for probably about seven or eight months, just looking for the right opportunity to buy into something good,” Allan says.

“We were looking for a complete U-turn in life and to do something cool and different.”

And that’s certainly represented in the name.

“Black Sheep genuinely means you're doing something different, you’re the black sheep of the family,” Allan explains, adding that sheep provide the couple a sense of familiarity.

Allan and Angela moved from Scotland to Canada five years ago, spending four years in Calgary before relocating to Kelowna.

“We have friends in Kelowna and came to visit a few times and decided this was the place we’re going to settle down and get our business going and give back to the community,” Allan says.

The Patersons hope the coffee shop becomes a go-to spot for people to connect.

“Whether it's to meet their friends or family they haven’t seen in a long time, or whether they come to do some work or have business meetings, we want it to be a nice social space, and obviously serve awesome coffee,” Allan explains.

The business has two patios, including one on the rooftop and another in the front, as well as indoor space for customers to enjoy.

Black Sheep Coffee Bar offers all of the classic beverage options, and soon they’ll have Italian cream sodas, cold brew on tap and lemonade on tap.

In addition, they sell pre-packaged sandwiches, a variety of salads and baked goods.

“We’re always looking at expanding the food range and the drink range to make the customer experience a lot nicer,” Allan adds.

Black Sheep Coffee Bar, located at 371 Bernard Avenue, is open seven days a week from 7 am to 6 pm.

"We've got a lot of work to do, but it's exciting times.”
