On Tuesday morning, dignitaries, community members and law enforcement officials from around BC, gathered on Doyle Avenue and Richter Street to celebrate the opening of the new RCMP detachment facility.
Members of the RCMP, Police services and auxiliary constables dressed in formal uniform and congregated at the original RCMP detachment on Doyle Avenue. They gathered to bid farewell to their old home for the past five decades, by lowering their Canadian flag, before proceeding in a ceremonial Red Serge march parade to their new facility at 1190 Richter Street.
Upon arrival, the flag from the old detachment was raised at the new detachment to abide by RCMP tradition.
Members of city council, including Mayor Basran, spoke highly of the work performed by local law enforcement officers and acknowledged the large turnout from community members who attended the event.
Local police services addressed the audience and officers from across B.C and Canada came to show their support. Attending members included Deputy Commissioner and Commanding Officer of BC RCMP, Brenda Butterworth-Carr, who traveled from the Yukon territory to celebrate with our Kelowna officers.
The new detachment won’t just be an upgrade for the community space-wise, but technologically. The new building has received upgrades in the departments of Evidence, Identification, Forensics, Records, Laboratory, and Cell Block.
Though the detachment’s official opening took place today, The RCMP have been reporting for duty at 1190 Richter Street since mid-June.
