Plans for 'middle income' housing in Kelowna moving along

Plans for a “middle income” housing project in downtown Kelowna are moving along.

At the end of April, BC’s Ministry of Housing said it was seeking proposals for 1428 St. Paul Street.

The property, which is currently home to a parking lot, was included in a list of pre-zoned sites that were added to the BC Builds property list to deliver more homes to middle income earners.

When the housing project was announced, the province said that under the BC Builds program, household incomes for families with children must not exceed the “75th income percentile,” which BC Housing based on Statistics Canada figures.

The 2024 figure is $191,910. Families without children must not exceed that percentile and must not earn more than $131,950 this year.

Last week, the city accepted the official rezoning application to add the rental only subzone to the property’s existing UC1 – Downtown Urban Centre zoning.

The city also accepted an application for lot consolidation and road dedication.

Once Kelowna city staff review both applications, a development permit application will likely be submitted and forward to city council for consideration.
