VIDEO: Student film festival packs a lot into an hour

Documentaries, experimental short films, music videos, animation, you name it.

It will all unfold in a one-hour package.

Next Monday, it's the Student Okanagan Film Festival at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.

This will be the seventh year of the festival.

Festival goers will see films from students all over the Okanagan, from high schoolers to students studying visual arts at UBCO.

Co-organizer Professor Myron Campbell said it's a lot of fun and it's a chance to celebrate the work of student filmmakers.

“It’s a great opportunity for these filmmakers to see their work on the big screen," said Campbell.

Local emerging filmmakers were invited a few months ago to submit their work for the chance to be included in the festival screening.

The goal is to create an hour of programming of the best local student-made films.

“The quality of films is getting better every year," added Campbell, "and we are looking forward to seeing and sharing what students have produced this year."

The mix of films is bound to move the audience in all directions.

"There will be a few laughs for sure," he said. "There are some serious moments as well."

And most of it will have been recorded locally.

"You'll see some familiar environments and maybe even some familiar faces," said Campbell.

The festival is juried, and the top filmmakers will receive prizes for their work.

Admission is by donation with all proceeds going back into the festival programme for future years.

The Student Okanagan Film Festival is 7 pm May 8 at the Mary Irwin Theatre at the Rotary Centre for the Arts.
