Wilson's Landing Fire Department hosting recruitment event, food drive and community dinner

The Wilson’s Landing Fire Department has a busy week ahead of them with their annual food drive happening along with a recruiting event and community dinner.

Residents in communities served by the department are encouraged to attend the annual Wilson’s Landing and Communities Giving Thanks dinner at the fire hall on Dec. 3 at 4 pm.

The aim of the community dinner is meant to bring the neighbourhood together and recognize the outstanding efforts of firefighters and their families during the McDougall Creek wildfire.

“Following a difficult summer, many families in our communities are facing difficult times financially,” says Chief Paul Zydowicz.

“We know how generous and supportive this community is and want to thank everyone for their continued support of the annual Santa Run food collection to help families in need on the west side of Okanagan Lake.”

The annual Santa Run food collection event is happening on Dec. 5 from 6-9 pm.

Residents living from Traders Cove to Shelter Cove are encouraged to leave their outdoor lights on and their donations on their doorstep, porch or at the end of their driveway for pickup.

On Dec. 7, the fire department will be kicking off a recruiting event to bulk up resources after the devastating McDougall Creek wildfire.

The campaign will focus on recruiting paid-on-call firefighters.

Prospective members must live within an eight-kilometre radius of Station 42 at 2396 Westside Road, be between 19 and 65 and in good physical condition.

An information session is being held on Dec. 7 at 6:30 pm at the fire hall.

“We are searching for individuals who want to represent their community and make a positive difference in the lives of others,” says Zydowicz.

“Our team values continuous learning and practice and will provide opportunities for recruits to learn and grow while forming lifelong relationships that extend beyond the call of duty.”

Anyone interested in joining is asked to bring an application form to the information session.

Prospective members will be contacted with information on next steps including interviews and physical tests.

Training is expected to begin in January.
