There will be six recruits joining the women’s team for the upcoming season and all of them are from Alberta.
Midfielders Annabelle Walker, Ashley Kavanaugh, Eleni Georgacacos and defenders Ainsley Kirk and Breanne Wong are from Calgary, while defender Sofia Lafuente is from Edmonton.
"We have a great mix of scoring, creating and defensive actions coming to our roster with this group of athletes,” said head coach Craig Smith in a release.
Lafuente joins the team with an impressive resume of club soccer.
She's a former provincial champion who played with the St. Albert Impact, as well as the Alberta Regional Excel (REX) program and the provincial team.
The defender was a runner-up at the USA Cup and a medalist at the Skyline Cup in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Calgary Blizzard Soccer Club is well represented in this recruiting class. Kirk, Walker, Wong and Kavanaugh all played together on the club team, winning gold at the 2022 club provincial championships and bronze at nationals.
Rounding out the recruits from Calgary is midfielder Georgacacos, who played club soccer with Calgary Southwest United and was a runner-up at the provincial championships in 2022.
Georgacacos was also a member of the Alberta REX program for three years.
“Each of the players come from great environments with great cultures which we're also looking forward to adding to our program," added Smith.
The players will be joining the team in July for training camp and preparing for the upcoming 2023 season .
