It was a special weekend on the edge of Kelowna at Camp Dunlop. Cub Scouts and their leaders celebrated 100 years of the program being in the Okanagan at their annual Cuboree.
“It's the 100th anniversary of Cub Scouts here in the Okanagan Mission area of Kelowna,” said Edward Brierley, First Okanagan Mission Scout Pack Akela (group leader).
“We lost unfortunately all the history, but we believe it probably started somewhere down towards Father Pandosy Mission originally, and we thought we’d celebrate that by laying a time capsule.”
Joining Brierley’s pack for the weekend were nine troops from across BC, including Rossland, Grand Forks and Kamloops.
“We've had all the groups put in articles, various scouting-related history and Kelowna-related history,” explained Brierley.
“So we got badges like (the) Ogopogo, newspaper articles, Cub badges, neckerchiefs, we dropped in the NHL standings because who knows, maybe we'll (the Vancouver Canucks) win this year, we're hoping, well, maybe we’ll win in 15 years.”
The items were placed into a PVC tube and into a stone monument that previously housed a time capsule that was put in 1991 to celebrate Cubs worldwide.
The next time the artifacts will see the light of day will be in 15 years when the First Okanagan Mission Scout Pack celebrates its 100th anniversary.
The highland-themed weekend was capped by the playing of bagpipes and a flag lowering as the groups looked forward to more years of fun.
“We do events like camping, cooking, hiking, geocaching, playing games, making crafts, just have an awful lot of fun,” added Brierley.
“Get them outdoors away from those computers.”
