North Okanagan RCMP have a suspect behind bars following an assault in Vernon on Tuesday.
According to police, at 9:30 am, a man in his 60s was riding his mobility scooter in the 3000th block of 30th Avenue. After attempting to maneuver around a bicycle that was blocking the sidewalk, a cyclist began yelling at the man, claiming he wasn't allowed to drive his scooter on the sidewalk.
Following the verbal altercation, the cyclist allegedly blocked the man, grabbed him, knocked him to the ground and assaulted him. A resident intervened and the man on the mobility scooter was free to leave.
"The disturbance drew the attention of the public who immediately contacted police. Our frontline officers attended to the scene but were unable to locate the individual on the mobility scooter." Said Cpl Tania Finn. "Fortunately, once he returned home, police were contacted to advise of the incident."
This entire incident was captured on video surveillance, which greatly helped investigators identify the suspect. The 39-year-old man was soon arrested for assault causing bodily harm. He remains in police custody.
Thankfully, the man on the scooter only received minor injuries and is resting at home.
