Police investigating assault after Okanagan woman, 93, pushed into path of moving bus

The Penticton RCMP is hoping the public can help them identify a woman who allegedly pushed a 93-year-old into the path of a moving bus.

The troubling incident happened around 11 am on Wednesday, June 5, immediately after the elderly female victim got off a local transit bus near Calgary Avenue and Main Street.

Police were told that the woman was “forcefully pushed” into the path of the bus as it began to pull away from the transit stop.

The suspect was reportedly a woman who was passing by with a cart full of belongings draped by a white blanket.

Although witnesses stepped in to help the victim, they were unable to detain the suspect before RCMP officers arrived at the scene.

“This is a very concerning incident that could have led to fatal results given the elderly woman’s age and physical capabilities,” said Cst. Kelly Brett.

“We are thankful that the bus driver was cognisant that something had occurred and was able to stop the bus prior to anything serious happening.”

Fortunately, the 93-year-old only sustained minor injuries and is now resting comfortably at home.

The Penticton RCMP thanked the witnesses who stepped up to help the lady and are urging them, or anyone else, to contact the detachment if they have any further information that could lead to the identification of the suspect.

Anyone with information for police, or relevant dash cam or security footage, is urged to contact the Penticton detachment at 250-492-4300 and ask to speak with Cst. Gary Sande.
