BC nurse suspended after admitting 'time theft' of more than $20K

A British Columbia nurse has been suspended after claiming more than $20,000 for shifts he didn’t work.

Jaston Dhaliwal, a licensed practical nurse in Abbotsford, “committed time theft” between March 2023 and July 2023, according to the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).

He was paid about $20,500 for approximately 47 full-time shifts that he did not work, BCCNM said in a consent agreement signed by the nurse.

BCCNM branded Dhaliwal’s actions “fraud.”

The college said the nurse has “voluntarily agreed” to a four-month suspension of his registration.

He must also complete "remedial activities” on ethics and professionalism.

“The agreement will remain in place for a minimum of 2.5 years of continuous nursing practice,” the BCCNM explained in a public notice.

Earlier this month, another nurse, Kennedy Baker, also admitted claiming cash for shifts she didn’t work.

She was wrongly paid over $23,000.

Baker had her licence suspended for six months.

The BCCNM told NowMedia then that it cannot, as a matter of policy, reveal whether the nurse paid back the cash.
