A fugitive wanted worldwide for the potential murder of a BC man has been arrested.
According to the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit of BC, Connor D'Monte, who was the focus of an international manhunt for over a decade for being involved in the murder of Kevin LeClair, has been arrested in Puerto Rico.
For those who don't know, the Lower Mainland was in the midst of some of the worst gang violence in history between 2008 and 2009. The two main groups included the Red Scorpions and the United Nation, who would routinely get caught in shootouts.
Police units began investigating the two groups, which led to the arrests and convictions of dozens of gang members. This helped lower the rates of death and injuries to residents caught in the crossfire.
In February of 2009, Kevin LeClair, who was a member of the Red Scorpions, was murdered in broad daylight during a shooting at a Langley strip mall. While his death was one of many, it prompted one of the longest joint investigations in CFSEU-BC history.
Since the start of the investigation, there have been 18 arrests and 12 convictions of United Nations gang members. One of these arrests was D'Monte, a high-ranking member of the United Nations.
CFSEU-BC, the Integrated Homicide Team, Canadian authorities and the Canadian government will now work with Puerto Rican authorities to confirm the man arrested was D'Monte.
Once this is confirmed, they will begin the extradition process so court proceedings can take place.
More to come.
