Retirement plans begin for BC man after $5M lotto win

Wei Dong Chen’s retirement plans look a lot different than they did a month ago.

The Burnaby resident no longer has any financial worries after winning the $5-million Classic Jackpot from the Lotto 6/49 draw on Feb. 28.

Chen learned of his win after checking the BCLC’s lottery app and he had a hard time convincing his wife that he wasn’t pulling her leg when he told her the life-changing news.

“My hand was shaking and I could not believe it,” he explained. “I told my wife and she said, ‘are you teasing me?’ She did not believe it!”

Chen plans on using some of his winnings to help pay for his daughter’s education, but is still thinking about what he wants to do for himself.

While retirement is suddenly much closer for him, he’s just taking two weeks off work for now to figure out the next steps in his career.

“I don’t need to work as hard,” he admitted. “I can plan to retire after my daughter finishes school!”

The winning ticket was purchased by Chen at the Parker Place Convenience Store in Richmond.
