A rare encounter was caught on camera by some lucky divers in BC waters recently.
Matteo Endrizzi, a diver and photographer from Nanaimo, posted videos on YouTube of an amazing up close and personal encounter with a bluntnose sixgill shark.
The group Endrizzi was diving with in the Alberni Inlet witnessed a juvenile shark that was about 2 metres long.
He says there’s no record of that shark species ever being seen in that area, and they are rare to encounter as they normally live in waters as deep as 2,500 metres.
“This was a bucket list event for me and many other divers, and I'm spoiled the encounter was as eventful as it was!” Endrizzi said about the experience in an Instagram post.
According to the Florida Museum, the shark has not been reported to attack humans without provocation. There has only been one documented attack by a bluntnose sixgill shark on a human since the 1500s.
The museum adds that little is known about the bluntnose shark due to it being a primarily deepwater species.
It is known to rest along the bottom of the ocean during the day, venturing into shallow waters to feed at night.
