UPDATE: 2 people dead after semi-trucks collide along Hwy 1

(UPDATE: May 28 at 10:02 am): Two people have died after a crash near Sorrento last night.

The RCMP said both the driver and passenger of a semi-truck that flipped on Hwy 1 died at the scene.

The truck, which was travelling east, "failed to make a right turn," Mounties said in a public release issued this morning.

That resulted in the vehicle "flipping over on its side in the incoming lane."

Police added: "Unable to stop in time, an oncoming semi-truck, traveling west collided with it."

The driver of the other truck "suffered minor injuries," according to RCMP spokesman Cpl. James Grandy.

The road was closed in both directions overnight and was last reported to be open to alternating single-lane traffic.

Anyone with footage of the crash, or anyone who witnessed it, is urged to call Chase RCMP at 250-679-3221.

Police said their investigation into the incident is ongoing.

(UPDATE: May 28 at 7:27 am): The highway is now open to single-lane alternating traffic.

Delays are expected.

(Original story: May 28 at 5:10 am): Hwy 1 is closed in both directions following a vehicle incident between Chase and Sorrento.

DriveBC did not provide details about the incident, but it was first reported just after midnight.

Highway webcams show a long line of traffic in the area early this morning.

Motorists are advised to reroute via Hwy 97 and 97A or 97B.

The road is estimated to reopen at about 8 am.

The incident, according to DriveBC, occurred at Lindberg Road in the Sorrento area.
