The UBC Okanagan Heat women’s golf team escaped Vancouver Island with some hardware after an impressive performance at the Vikes Spring Shootout to begin the week.
Emily Cornwall and Julia Alexander-Carew claimed the top two spots in the individual competition, leading the Heat to a victory on the team side of things as well.
For Cornwall, who opened the tournament at Cordova Bay Golf Club with an impressive 72 (+1) on Monday, it was her second individual win of the season and third of her UBCO career.
She followed up her sparkling 72 with a 77 (+6) on Tuesday, with clutch birdies on 15 and 18 that were enough to hold off her teammate Alexander-Carew by one stroke.
Alexander-Carew, who is in the midst of a very impressive rookie season with the Heat, shot her 77 on Monday, then made a Tuesday charge with a 73 (+2) with three birdies.
María Llampallas was the third-best UBCO golfer over three days, firing a two-round score of 156 (+14) to earn her highest individual finish of the season.
Bess Chan shot 161 (+19) and Lauren Nedo shot 170 (+28) over two days to round out the Heat performances.
In the end, the Heat beat the second place University of Victoria Vikes for 18 shots to earn the first place team finish on Vancouver Island.
Next up for UBCO is the 2024 Canadian University/College Championship, which will be held from June 3-6 at the Idylwylde Golf Club in Sudbury, Ont.
With back-to-back bronze medals at the event over the past two years, the Heat will be looking for another podium finish in early June.
