Grammy and Juno award-winning Cuban-Canadian singer-songwriter released his 8th studio album and is performing in Kelowna’s Rotary Centre for the Arts this Thursday, Oct.14.
KelownaNow interviewed Alex Cuba at the Mary Irwin Theatre briefly before his sold-out show.
This is not the artist’s first time in Kelowna, “although it always feels like the first time, it's a place that you like instantly.”
Cuba has won four Latin Grammys, and was nominated three times for the American Grammy awards and is currently up for another Latin Grammy with his latest album 'Mendo'.
“Mendo is an Afro Cuban word that describes the unexplainable talent, the unmistakable talent,” he said, also describing it as “magic and talent”.
Over the years Cuba has collaborated with Nelly Furtado, Blue Rodeo, Cuban artists Pablo Milanes, Omara Portuondo and more.
Written from his home in Smithers, he mentions that his latest album is very “special and intimate” because it was done during “a very strange time”- the pandemic.
When asked what this new album meant to Cuba, he said “It means that I’m not done yet in music, it means that I can still keep creating and pushing my own limits.”
Cuba said Kelowna is a beautiful place and that he is happy to be here.
“I’m looking forward to tonight for sure, to give them all my love.”
He will be returning to Kelowna during the spring of next year, Apr. 1 to perform with the Okanagan Symphony Orchestra.
