It will be an interesting and informative weekend for 24 high school students in West Kelowna.
The West Kelowna RCMP’s Indigenous Policing Services opened up its annual Cop Camp today.
It’s an overnight camp held at Mount Boucherie Secondary School that two dozen kids in grades 10-12 are able to participate in.
The goal of the camp is to help build a stronger community relationship between police and Indigenous communities, an RCMP release said.
The kids will get a closer look at many aspects of policing, including the canine team, forensic identification, report writing, the tactical team, water safety and more.
Cst. Rohel Williams, who will lead the camp again this year alongside Sherri Lund, says they’re very passionate about this event.
“The students get an opportunity to learn hands on with several of our RCMP officers coming to the camp to share their expertise and experiences,” he explained.
“We are very proud of the students that participate all weekend and we believe we are breaking down some of the barriers felt between the students and the RCMP.”
After participating in the camp over the weekend, the 24 students will get to be involved in a graduation ceremony on Monday.
