A prolonged spell of hot, dry weather combined with recent lightning storms around British Columbia has quickly kicked the province’s wildfire season into high gear.
With 345 active wildfires currently burning around BC, the Province is urging drivers to be prepared as they take to the highway for a summer road trip over the coming weeks.
“As fire conditions can change quickly, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure advises drivers that provincial highways may close with limited notice,” says a statement from the Province.

It’s something that has already been seen in recent days, with the biggest closure being Hwy 1 between Cache Creek and Spences Bridge due to the Shetland Creek wildfire.
Hwy 6 has also shut down south of Nakusp, while Hwy 26 is closed at Wells.
“Drivers should ensure they are prepared for possible delays or closures,” the Province’s statement noted. “Travel with a full tank of gas, food, water and other emergency supplies.”
The statement added that non-essential to and within fire-affected areas is discouraged to help avoid traffic congestion on evacuation routes.
