Environment Canada (EC) is warning of less-than-ideal driving conditions on BC Interior highways today.
Highway alerts have been put in place for three major routes and all of them are for different reasons.
A winter storm warning is in place for the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1), with 10-20 centimetres of snow expected to fall in the area of Eagle Pass and Rogers Pass by Wednesday morning.
For the Coquihalla Highway (Hwy 5), it’s a special weather statement regarding heavy rain, with between 60-80 millimetres anticipated over the course of the day.
Finally, there’s a freezing rain warning in place for the Okanagan Connector (Hwy 97C), which EC says is due to “warm air aloft combined with below-zero surface temperatures.”
Hwy 97C has been down to one lane westbound for a vehicle recovery this morning, but it's not affecting traffic much more than a minor delay.
All of these highway alerts are due to a potent atmospheric river that made landfall on the British Columbian coast Monday.
According to EC, it brought over 100 millimetres of rain to multiple areas on Vancouver Island and the south coast.
It even resulted in a pre-emptive overnight closure of Hwy 1 through the Fraser Canyon due to the risk of instability after wildfires and previous flooding in the area.
