Sign clutter around Kelowna is going to get cleaned up thanks to a new policy approved by City Council on Monday.
Tourist destination signs will be cleaned up and less confusing to visitors as well the city will also be removing illegal signs that are posted along busy roadways. The new Tourist Oriented Destination Signs (TODS) will assist visitors and residents with getting to major attractions within the city.
A new criteria will be put into place for businesses that are eligible to put up a sign including; the attraction is located within city limits or just outside of the city limits, open to the general public and serves tourists, they are a registered stakeholder with Tourism Kelowna, and be open at least five days per week for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks per year.

Destinations such as wineries, heritage sites, bed and breakfast, entertainment attractions and educational attractions are included as classified for signage. The new TODS will help maintain road safety as well as avoid driver confusion according to a report presented to council. Existing signs will be replaced at no cost to the business. Businesses that cannot participate in the program include shopping malls, theatres and restaurants.
