Yet another smart meter fire has taken place in Saskatchewan, the ninth since the meters were installed earlier this year.
The province’s Crown utility is investigating this latest smart meter fire, which occurred in Regina Friday morning. According to SaskPower Media Relations Consultant Heather Johnson, the meter failure occurred at a residence.
“This meter failure appears to be similar to the other eight smart meter fires of concern that have taken place earlier this year,” said Johnson in an email to KelownaNow.
Last summer the province ordered SaskPower to remove more than 100,000 of the newer model meters that had already been installed due to at least eight reported fires. SaskPower’s CEO recently resigned following the release into smart meter fires that said customer’s safety wasn’t a priority.
Saskatchewan isn’t the only province to have smart meter related fires; there have been 23 reports in Ontario since 2011. No smart meter fires have been reported in BC, according to officials.
