The police officers who attended the scene in Enderby where Kyle Gianis died have been cleared of any wrongdoing.
The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) said Gianis died from “self-inflicted injuries” on Aug. 5.
He had been involved in a shooting just days earlier.
IIO said officers responded to a call from a campsite near Enderby just after midnight on Aug. 5.
A man was alleged to have assaulted two women with a weapon.
“Independent witnesses corroborate that the man sustained self-inflicted injuries before departing the campsite in a recreational vehicle (RV),” the IIO explained.
“Police located the man at approximately 2 am. and following a cautious approach which included use of tear gas and a 40mm less-lethal round, at 3 am officers found the man to be in medical distress and provided aid.
“Emergency Health Services, who had been staged nearby, arrived a short time later to provide further medical assistance, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Based on the available evidence, the man’s death was not related to police actions. The IIO investigation is now concluded.”
The IIO investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
