Kelowna water polo athletes have a weekend to remember

Four members of the Kelowna Water Polo Club competed in the Lower Mainland over the weekend against teams from across Canada.

Taking place was the 2024 Silvia Wilson-McDermid Memorial Tournament of Courage, showcasing 22 squads from as far as Ontario.

Competing in the 13U co-ed division were Dustin Clarke and Liam Halsall, who put on a “thrilling” show against the Surrey Water Polo Club in the gold-medal final.

“Both players exhibited commendable defensive prowess and scored remarkable goals, contributing significantly to their team's success,” reads a release from the club.

Evelyn Barr and Aanika Jonson represented the Pacific Storm in the 15U girls division, facing opponents from Calgary, Ottawa and Saskatchewan.

The pair “demonstrated remarkable resilience, gearing up for future competitions,” such as the 15U National Competition League in May.

"As their coach, it was heartwarming to witness our athletes have fun, make friends and prove they can compete with some of Western Canada's best athletes in their age group," said senior Kelowna Water Polo Club coach Adam Frank.

Each team at the annual event awarded a medal to an athlete for “demonstrating exceptional courage” throughout the tournament.

“Liam Halsall, representing Kelowna Water Polo Club, received the Tournament of Courage medal for his outstanding determination and courage in facing older and more physical opponents in the 15U Pacific Storm team,” added the club.

The club’s next event is scheduled for early March at the H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre.
