(UPDATE: 1:50 p.m.) - A witness at the scene tells NowMedia that it'll be quite a while before Hwy 1 reopens to traffic.

According to Jennifer Crate, a police cruiser just drove by the stalled traffic announcing that the road would be shut down for "several hours."

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. and it's believed that there's been one fatality.

"One person crossed the center line and there was a head on collision," Crate told NowMedia. "A single occupant in a red vehicle (looks like a car) did not survive."

"The other vehicle with at least 2 occupants flipped on to its side and they are okay."

The Kamscan Twitter account, which monitors police scanners around the region, also reported that there was a fatality in the crash.

(Original story: 1:10 p.m.) - Anyone heading east for the weekend may want to think twice about their route.

A crash has closed the Trans Canada Highway (Hwy 1) about 10 kilometres east of Sicamous.

The Kamscan Twitter account reports that an air ambulance has been called to the scene and calls it both a “serious accident” and "fatal."

DriveBC says an assessment is currently in progress and heavy delays are expected.

No estimated time of opening has been given and there’s no available detour.

DriveBC will update the situation at 2 p.m. and NowMedia will update this story as that information becomes available.
