The Kelowna Curling Club is celebrating 75 years

What started as a desire to curl indoors during the second world war has become a staple of the Kelowna community.

In April of 1942, a group of individuals grew tired of only curling outdoors, so they started a society to build a curling club in Kelowna.

By 1951, that dream had come true and the first Kelowna Curling Club was built on the corner of Water Street and Doyle Avenue.

The club grew and in 1968 the Brier came to town, which is still the largest curling event ever held in Kelowna.

It was the first of many National and International events to be hosted by the Kelowna Curling Club.

In 1978, the club moved to its current spot on Recreation Avenue, which also saw it grow to 12 sheets of ice.

Today, the Kelowna Curling Club is the largest curling club in the world with more than 1,200 members and four World Championship titles.

To celebrate the club’s 75th anniversary, the September 8th-10th weekend will be full of festivities that you won’t want to miss.

There will be a reception with live music on Friday, September 8th to kick off the weekend.

Things will ramp up on Saturday with guest speaker Bryan Mudryk from TSN and the Hip Replacements providing the soundtrack to a night of dinner and dancing.

Finally, there will be a brunch of Sunday to wind up the anniversary weekend.

A silent auction will run all weekend with many curling celebrity autographed items up for sale.

You need a ticket to take part in the weekend fun, which you can purchase here, but there’s also a free open house between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Happy anniversary to the Kelowna Curling Club!
