Fun indoor activities that will get you out of the smoke in Kelowna

With the first absence of bright and shiny days in a long while, Kelownians may be at a loss for activities in the city and how to have fun without the sun.

There is still an air quality statement in effect due to wildfire smoke in the region, so it's best to spend some time inside.

The smoke-filled skies make it a challenge for some people to enjoy the great outdoors, but never fear, there's still plenty of fun to be had when you can't get outside.

Kelowna has a medley of activities for the "laid back, easy going" type to the "where's the nearest adrenaline dispensary" kind of folks.

Here are some ideas to keep you off the couch for the rest of the weekend.

Indoor Action Activities

One way to avoid the couch surf is to throw on the trunks and hit the real surf — not on the lake of course, but inside the H20 Centre at the FlowRider. It's one way to feel like you're having fun in the sun without actually being outside.

Try one of the other "gneiss" things to do in Kelowna and hit the climbing gym. Gneiss Climbing supports any level of climber from kid to beginner to bouldering all-star with a range of dynamic climbing walls.

Treasure Hunting

You don't have to wear an eyepatch or carry a scabbard to scout for plunder in Kelowna. With a wide range of local shops and thrifty stores there is always somewhere to dock up and look for something to add to your stock.

Whether it's starting up that rad eight-track and vinyl collection from Kelowna's Underground Music, continuing your antique assemblage at Artista Art and Antiques or adding another timeless classic to your bookshelf from High Browse Books, Kelowna houses a remarkable amount of local treasuries, just set sail (or go for a drive).

Local Bean Breweries

A perk of living in Kelowna's easy-going atmosphere is the plethora of coffee shops posted on every corner of the Okanagan gem's downtown — as well as across the city.

To list downtown's coffee cabanas and cocoa clubs in its entirety would take some decades (we think) but here are some notable bean blenders to post up with a book, a friend or a laptop.

Indoor Activities — Brains over Brawn

Even the most active people need a break, so why not try working that squishy muscle in your skull for the best results.

Kelowna Escape Games, Impulse Escape Room and VR Lounge and similar attractions offer an indoor test of for the keen-eyed and shrewd Kelowna residents. Alternatively, strap on the goggles and slip into another dimension in their virtual reality — maybe one where blues skies and sunshine come back.

Experience the soul of Kelowna

Kelowna is a tapestry woven by its diverse residents and interesting history — plenty of places around town are prepared to show them off.

The Kelowna Art Gallery often cycles their creative set for viewers while the Rotary Centre for the Arts hosts events and activities on top of their exhibits.

Alternatively, Kelowna's Museums (Okanagan Heritage Museum, Okanagan Military Museum, Okanagan Wine and Orchard Museum or the Central Okanagan Sports Hall of Fame) recount the past you didn't know about the Okanagan.

Autumn Cleaning

You may dislike it, but there are always things sitting torpidly on your to-do list.

It may not be as popular as spring cleaning — or a Sunday sun day with a sundae — but sometimes it's just as comforting to throw a Backstreet Boys CD in the stereo while you make the most of your adult responsibilities.

You can substitute the Backstreet Boys with anything, but we recommend something from your adolescence — nostalgia is a journey you'll embark on during autumn cleaning.
