The BC Green Caucus is calling on the BC NDP government to establish free transit for youth up to age 18.
Currently, children 12 and under can ride transit for free on all BC Transit and TransLink services.
"Providing safe transportation options is essential for the well-being and independence of our youth, many of whom face significant barriers due to financial constraints,” said Sonia Furstenau, party leader and MLA for Cowichan Valley.
”Free transit makes it easier for teens to access school, extracurricular, and employment opportunities that are critical to their development and future success.”
Furstenau adds that in the summer months, transit can expand job options and help to alleviate the labour shortage many local businesses are struggling with.
And, the party says an investment into buses and essential infrastructure is also needed.
Fares differ depending on the community, but currently the cost of a monthly bus pass in Victoria for youth under 18-years-old is $45, compared to $85 for adults.
In Kelowna, youth up to Grade 12 also pay $45, compared to $70 for an adult and $55 for post-secondary students at Okanagan College.
