Olympics recap: Canadians add a trio of bronze medals to wrap up first week of competition

Team Canada continued to find the podium on the seventh day of competition at the Paris Olympics as Canadians earned bronze medals in swimming, tennis mixed doubles and women’s trampoline.

Sophiane Méthot managed to give herself an early birthday present as she competed in the women’s trampoline event and won a bronze medal.

With six athletes competing in the final, Méthot was in second place with two more jumps to be completed.

Bryony Page of Great Britain took second place and Hu Yicheng of China was unable to complete her performance, keeping Méthot in third place.

Also finding their way to the podium was mixed doubles duo Gaby Dabrowski and Félix Auger-Aliassime.

The duo are the first Canadians to win Olympic tennis medals since Daniel Nestor and Sébastien Lareau won gold in men’s doubles in 2000.

The third and final bronze medal was won by a difference of a few hundredths of a second as Kylie Masse reached the podium in the women’s 200m backstroke.

Masse won the silver medal in the same event in 2020 and is the first Canadian swimmer to win an individual medal at three Olympic games.

The Ontario native has five medals since the 2016 games in Rio.

The Canadian men’s basketball team won its third and final group-stage basketball game to enter the knockout stage undefeated.

Dubbed the “Group of Death” before the games, Canada swept their competition en route to an 88-85 win against Spain on Friday.

The win knocked Spain out of the tournament and Canada will enter the quarter-finals no lower than the third seed.
